Smart Moms is recruiting for a part-time Litigation Attorney on behalf of a long-standing, trusted client, an established Raleigh-based small law firm known for high-quality work in licensing, ethics, and disciplinary matters. The firm’s principals have more than 30 years of experience and seek an attorney to join their team, with most work performed remotely.

This is a regulatory/administrative practice focused on professional licensing, discipline, and ethics. This attorney will assist in representing some professional boards and represent individual professionals before other licensing boards.  The candidate must live in the Raleigh-Durham area, be available to cover client issues during normal business hours but otherwise would have a flexible schedule, with the rare evening and Saturday client obligations.

The position is structured as an independent contractor role on an initial basis, and malpractice insurance is included. Serious candidates should submit their resumes, cover letters, salary requirements, and a writing sample written solely by the applicant.

Training will be provided for new areas of practice.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

The candidate must be licensed by the North Carolina State Bar and have at least one to two years of legal practice experience, though more is preferred. The candidate will be expected to handle hearings and conferences, take depositions, and draft responses, orders, pleadings, discovery,  memorandum of law, and other related legal documents.

Ideal candidates possess excellent academic credentials along with strong research, writing, oral, and organizational skills. One to two years of litigation experience is preferred. Candidates should be able to work independently, demonstrate a strong work ethic, and collaborate well. Familiarity with e-filing in state and federal court is a plus.

Skills include:

  • Providing confident and well-reasoned counsel to clients on a variety of legal topics
  • Effective communication and negotiation skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel
  • Developing litigation strategies
  • Experience with trial preparation, including written discovery, depositions, oral argument, and examination of witnesses

  • Pay: $60–$70 per hour depending upon experience
  • Weekly Hours: Initially 15–20 hours
  • The potential for additional hours and transition to W-2 employee are anticipated.
